CHAPTER 14

LESLIE

We scattered and scampered away as buckshot and mines blasted dirt into the air, creating large holes in the ground.

My hair whipped around me. Claudine yelped, Gran cursed, Imogen raced away as if carried with the wind, and the homeless man, whose hood had now fallen off, had an unnatural grin on his dirty face. Unkempt hair, resembling a stray, shaggy Labrador-like fur, rested on his head.

Buzzing sounds of musket balls whizzing amplified my panic. We ducked and dodged, racing back toward the safety of the trees.

I pumped my arms. There was no supernatural speed to make us dash faster away. The horses were gaining on us.

Turning to my right, I watched the homeless man stumble, falling into a mortar-produced hole.

“Crap,” I cursed and turned to save him. He’d gone with them on the promise of a couple of rewards or payment—death was indeed not what he’d had in mind.

Breaking off, I turned right, but the ghostly men and what must have been a garrison all chased Gran and Claudine, giving me a space to hop into the hole.

My jaw dropped that sitting there, still wearing the homeless man’s clothes, was no one other than Belphegor.

“I told you we’d see each other tonight,” he said with an out-of-place light-hearted smile.

“What the hell?” I snapped. He’d been pretending to be this guy, but why?

“Well, you need my help after all.”

“How did you even know I was here, and why pretend to be someone else?”

He studied me, his eyes flashing with bits of fire, appearing more like the demon prince of sloth, of all things. But instead of looking like what I’d think a demon might be—grotesque and with black wings, he was wearing the body of a twenty-year-old like an accessory.

“There are many ways, dear. And this sounded like a bit of fun.” He leaned back against the mortar’s dirt wall like there wasn’t a cavalry of fiery horses stampeding above.

“Is this when you call in the Order to help?” He rubbed his hands together.

“Are you itching for a chance to deal with the Order?” The Order policed the supernatural, keeping the human world safe from those who might prey on it.

“I’m part of the Order.” I pulled my shoulders back. Sure, I might not know a lot about what I was doing or even be a master of craft and swords. I was working my way up, asking questions, and growing. I was a better seer today than I’d been yesterday, willing to put in the hours of training, reading, and Tarot or Oracle card work. Heck, my playlist was all about the craft.

But those things helped me to grow s l o w l y.

It wasn’t like I was cackling in the hallways with a broom requesting to eat children or do evil. The real world didn’t know what I did in my closet, in private.

The heart had different chambers, some so deep and secret, no one knew the truth.

“But are you? I’ve been watching you. You’re a
